Mamula Island by Banyan Tree

Rising from the Adriatic at the entrance to Montenegro’s Boka Bay, Mamula Island by Banyan Tree transforms a carefully restored 19th-century fortress into an intimate destination shaped by heritage, contemporary design and the surrounding sea. Reached by boat from the Luštica Peninsula, the island feels wonderfully removed from the mainland, yet remains within reach of Tivat and Dubrovnik airports.

Only 32 light-filled rooms and suites are arranged within the historic fort and along the water’s edge. Original stone architecture meets refined modern interiors, while floor-to-ceiling windows and private balconies frame uninterrupted views of the Adriatic or the fortress’s atmospheric inner spaces.

Dining celebrates the flavours of Montenegro and the wider Mediterranean through seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. Kamena interprets regional culinary traditions with contemporary finesse, while Parasol brings a relaxed rhythm to the heart of the island beside three elegant pools. Terraces overlooking the sea provide memorable settings from morning until evening.

The Banyan Tree Spa occupies a serene sanctuary within the fortress. Facilities include Finnish and herbal saunas, a steam room, halotherapy, experience showers, an aqua-flotation zone and spaces for yoga, Pilates, meditation and sound healing. Guests may also kayak, paddleboard, snorkel, explore the Luštica Peninsula by e-bike or discover nearby coastal villages and the Blue Cave.

Mamula Island’s singular allure lies in its dramatic sense of place: an entire historic fortress encircled by sea, reimagined as a private retreat where architecture, culture, wellbeing and nature exist in quiet harmony.
